BoP Warning as Tropical Weather Moves In

The Bay of Plenty is bracing for heavy rain as a tropical weather system moves across the North Island. An orange heavy rain warning is in effect from Thursday morning, with areas west of Whakatāne expecting up to 120mm and eastern areas potentially receiving 150–200mm by Friday morning. MetService warns of surface flooding, slips, and dangerous driving conditions, urging residents to clear gutters in advance.

Meteorologist Chris Brandolino says the rain is part of an "atmospheric river" stretching from New Caledonia. He advises avoiding outdoor activities from Thursday through Saturday, especially during the school holidays.

Looking ahead, the Bay of Plenty and much of the North Island face a wetter and warmer July–September period, with above-average temperatures and increased flooding risk in already-saturated areas.

Zespri Taps Lisa Carrington as Global Face of Kiwifruit

Zespri has named Olympian Dame Lisa Carrington as its first-ever global brand ambassador. The four-year partnership aims to promote health and wellbeing through kiwifruit, aligning with Carrington’s values and achievements.

As a Bay of Plenty native—where 80% of NZ’s kiwifruit is grown—Carrington says she’s proud to reconnect with her roots. Zespri launched the partnership with a cinematic short film, and Carrington sees the role as a potential pathway into a post-sport career.
