Te Puna Rallies After Fire Destroys Local’s Home & Classic Cars
Te Puna’s Harry Horman lost everything in a massive fire that tore through his property on Sunday night, taking out his home, caravan, and eight of his nine classic cars. The fire hit 1000°C, setting off explosions from gas canisters and fuel tanks, and despite trying to fight it with fire extinguishers, there was no stopping it. Now, he’s left with just the clothes on his back. Fire crews were on-site until 2AM Monday, and investigators have ruled it accidental.
Since then, the Te Puna community has stepped up, offering a place to stay, clothes, food, and support. Now, Domino’s Bureta is jumping in to help—on Thursday, March 13, they’re donating $1 from every pizza sold between 11AM-8PM to support Harry. He says he’s blown away by the kindness of the community, adding, “At least I’m alive.”

89 New Homes Coming to Otūmoetai After Years of Delays
An 89-home development is finally set to kick off in late 2025 at 80 Ngatai Rd, Otūmoetai, a solid eight years after the land was bought. The two-storey homes will be a mix of for sale and rent, helping to ease Tauranga’s housing shortage. Originally planned for 56 homes, the number jumped to 89 after Plan Change 33 rezoned the area for high-density housing. Each home gets a car park, bike parking, and landscaped areas, all within walking distance of schools, shops, and Tauranga CBD.
The project’s resource consent is in, and the council has notified affected parties, but so far, local businesses are backing it, with Bureta Superette saying it’s in the perfect spot and will bring more people to the area. No word on what caused the delay or the cost of the build, but if all goes to plan, new homeowners could move in as early as next year.
