Tauranga Skaters Finally Have a Home
Good Morning Scoopers!
What a stunner of a weekend. Two mint days, hope you all made the most of it. We’ve got a bunch going on this week. Lots of events and a few cash drops coming your way.
In today’s edition, Tauranga’s roller sports scene just got a massive upgrade. After years of hustling for a permanent home, three local clubs now have a world-class skate centre to call their own, and they reckon it’s gonna put the Bay on the map.
Meanwhile, city centre business owners aren’t stoked about the rollout of paid parking. Some say it’s already scaring off customers, and a few are close to shutting shop. We’ll break down what’s happening and what the council’s saying.
Couple of cash drops this week. We’re about to launch something pretty big, so stay tuned, clue’s at the bottom 💰

Tauranga CBD businesses are fired up over paid parking
At a recent Downtown Tauranga meeting, local business owners made it clear, they’re not happy about paid parking rolling out to more fringe streets around the city centre.
Lisa from Satori Sushi said she’s been struggling since relocating to The Strand, customers are no-showing because parking’s too hard. She reckons adding more paid parking “will kill all the businesses” and wants two hours free to bring people back.
Others backed her up. Sarah from Wanderlust said her hostel is at its worst ever occupancy, and Margaret from The Collection said the CBD’s been hurting for a while. They’re calling for cheaper or fairer rates across all of Tauranga, not just slugging the city centre.
The council delayed the rollout while they figure out if residents in the fringe zone should get permits, but they still plan to start the changes this month. Councillors say they need to raise $46 million from parking to help fund the new civic precinct, which didn’t sit well with most of the room.
A few ideas were thrown around, like free parking after 3pm and better late-night buses, but overall, it’s clear: businesses feel like they’re footing the bill while already fighting to stay afloat.
Council’s meant to review the permit plan on August 5. We’ll keep you posted.

Baypark’s New Rink Opens Doors
Tauranga’s finally got a proper home for roller sports.
The new Revolution Skate Centre at Baypark opened on July 20, and it’s already changing the game. Inline hockey, roller derby, and artistic skating have all been grinding for years without a real home. These clubs were basically couch-surfing, and now they’ve got a world-class setup to train, host comps, and bring in the community with public discos and “learn to skate” sessions.
Joel from the Mount Mustangs said they’ve gone from one team to over 100 members, and now with their own rink, they’re seeing the juniors level up fast. The roller derby crew’s buzzing too — they’ve already got people signing up just from seeing the space, and they reckon it’s going to boost the sport big time. Same for artistic skating — the goal now is to get Tauranga skaters competing internationally.
This facility didn’t just pop up overnight either. It took years of volunteer hustle, back-and-forth with council, and club leaders pushing non-stop to get it done. Now that it’s here, it feels like a real moment for Tauranga’s sport scene.
Expect to hear a lot more about Revolution Skate Centre — this is just the beginning.
