Fault at Mount Substation Cuts Power to 21,000+ Homes

Power has been restored to over 21,000 Tauranga residents after a major outage caused widespread disruption on Thursday afternoon. A fault at Transpower’s Mount Maunganui substation around 12:30pm cut electricity to suburbs including Mount Maunganui, Arataki, Te Maunga, and Pāpāmoa Beach.

The outage knocked out traffic lights, creating chaos on major roads like Hewletts Rd, with reports of drivers ignoring intersections. Powerco and Transpower worked to backfeed part of the network by 1:20pm while crews investigated the fault. Civil Defence advised caution on the roads as services were gradually restored.

Puchner Makes History with U23 Canoe Slalom Silver

Oliver Puchner, a 22-year-old from Pukehina, has made history by becoming the first New Zealander to win an individual medal at the Under-23 Canoe Slalom World Championships. Competing in his final year of eligibility, he earned a silver medal in the C1 final in Foix, France.

Puchner described the moment as surreal and emotional, especially after years of narrowly missing the finals. His breakthrough performance is a significant milestone for New Zealand in a sport typically dominated by European athletes, and a promising sign as he moves into senior-level competition.
