A Kiwi Innovation

Good Morning Scoopers!

King’s Birthday tomorrow, enjoy the extra day off if you’re getting it. And if you’re clocking in while everyone else sleeps in… Hats off to you. Keep holding it down.

In today’s scoop, a local innovation is turning thousands of tonnes of rejected kiwifruit into a sustainable leather alternative, made right here in the Bay. Meanwhile, volunteers in Te Puke hit the streets over the weekend for a community clean-up, collecting rubbish and bringing some pride back to the town centre.

We’ve got a couple of cash drops this week, so stay tuned for the clue 👀

Kiwi Startup Turns Kiwifruit Waste into Leather Alternative

Shelley Houston, founder of KiwiLeather Innovations in Papamoa, has developed a sustainable leather alternative made from rejected kiwifruit—of which over 50,000 tonnes go to waste in NZ each year.
Inspired by fruit-based biomaterials in Europe, she partnered with Scion Research to create a durable, plastic-free, plant-based leather. The product is being targeted at industries like automotive and furniture manufacturing, with prototype products expected soon.

Te Puke Team Tackles Litter in First Community Clean-Up

A small volunteer group led by Craig Wallace, coordinator of Keep Te Puke Beautiful, spent Sunday morning cleaning up the south side of Jellicoe St, focusing especially on cigarette butts. Inspired by a similar UK initiative, Wallace said the effort brought a positive vibe and community recognition.
This was the first official group cleanup since Te Puke joined the Keep New Zealand Beautiful network. With gear supplied by the organization, Wallace hopes to make it a monthly event, with updates shared on the Keep Te Puke Beautiful Facebook page.
