Olympic Dreams & Marine Moves

Morning Scoopers!

Hope you got a chance to reset over the weekend. We were in Kawerau for a Tangi. Always good to catch up with whānau, even if it’s not under the best circumstances.

In the news, Karlina Steiner is swapping artistic swimming for rowing as she sets her sights on the Olympics, and Waikato Uni’s marine research facility is officially locked in for Sulphur Point after years of debate.

From Pool to Oars: Karlina Steiner’s Olympic Comeback

Former artistic swimmer Karlina Steiner had her sights set on the Olympics, but the $60,000 price tag to chase selection for 2024 made her pull the pin. A three-time world champ rep for NZ, she knew she couldn’t justify the cost and wasn’t about to ask her parents to cover it. Still hungry for the Olympic dream, she gave rowing a go after a mate suggested it. Even though she thought it was all arms (spoiler: it’s mostly legs), she fell in love with the sport and committed fully. Fast forward, and she’s already picked up her first rowing medal, a silver at the nationals in Twizel, racing in a composite women’s coxed eight with Tauranga and Ōamaru rowers.

Next season, she’s stepping up to the club category, meaning the training is about to get real, especially her cardio. Off the water, she’s working at Te Puke High School as an art teacher, building connections with students and rediscovering her own creativity after losing a bit of drive through her artistic swimming days. Long-term, she’s keen to get her full teaching degree and head back to Te Puke High, all while keeping her Olympic rowing dream alive.

Waikato Uni’s $1.38M Marine Facility Locked in for Tauranga

The University of Waikato is locking in a 99-year lease for $1.38M to build a marine research and education facility at Marine Park, Sulphur Point. It’ll replace the Coastal Marine Field Station and feature research labs, classrooms, and public spaces. The uni says this will be one of a kind globally, focusing on climate change, sustainability, and aquaculture, with the goal of helping NZ hit $3B in aquaculture revenue by 2035. The lease was signed in July 2023, but wasn’t made public at first, which raised a few eyebrows.

There’s been pushback from locals who don’t want to lose green space, and some councillors aren’t stoked about the lack of a cost-benefit analysis or the low financial return on prime land. The Ombudsman ruled the council followed the right process, so things are moving forward. The uni is finalizing costs and engineering, with a report due in June, and if all goes to plan, the facility will be up and running by 2027/28.
