Quinn Boyle’s Ice-Cold Wins on the World Stage
Quinn Boyle, a 19-year-old from Ōtamarākau, is making waves in one of the world’s coldest sports, ice swimming. Representing New Zealand’s 15-strong Frozen Ferns team, Boyle took home two silver medals in the 500m and 1000m age group events at the World Ice Swimming Championships in Italy, also placing fifth and sixth overall. Despite minimal ice bath training this time around, Boyle credits his past experience and mental toughness for his success in sub -2°C water.
Now studying agribusiness at Lincoln University, he’s gearing up for another shot at the Cook Strait and possibly an ice mile. With ice swimming pushing for Winter Olympics recognition, Boyle is excited about where the sport is heading. He gave a big thanks to the Te Puke and Western Bay communities for their backing, saying he couldn’t have done it without their support.

History Being Rebuilt in the CBD
Tauranga’s historic Monmouth Redoubt is finally getting a proper upgrade. The council’s kicking off a major restoration to make sure the site sticks around for future generations and is easier for everyone to access.
Originally the Pā site of Taumatakahawai, before British troops built the redoubt in 1864, it’s tied to major events like Gate Pā and Te Ranga. Work starts this week and runs through to late 2025. First up: reinforcing the redoubt banks and removing four trees to protect the underground history. Don’t worry though, those trees will be carved into whakairo by local hapū, so the cultural value stays alive. Later on, a new boardwalk and signage will help tell the story properly. Ngāi Tamarāwaho, Ngāti Tapu, and Ngāi Tukairangi are all involved, alongside historical groups and Heritage NZ.
