Te Puke Reconnected: $6.1M Bridge Officially Opens

Te Puke’s new $6.1 million bridge on No. 4 Road has officially opened, restoring a vital connection for the community two and a half years after the original bridge was destroyed by flooding in January 2023. The 30m-long, single-lane bridge replaces a temporary Bailey bridge that was installed shortly after the washout.

Western Bay of Plenty Mayor James Denyer led the dawn ribbon-cutting ceremony, thanking iwi, residents, and contractors for their support. Despite construction challenges like poor ground conditions and weather delays, the project team successfully completed the bridge. Temporary traffic restrictions will be added later to finish surfacing work.

End of an Era: Greerton Festival Called Off

Greerton’s beloved Cherry Blossom Festival has been cancelled for 2025 after nearly 20 years due to rising costs and financial pressures. The Greerton Business Association made the decision to shift focus toward more sustainable initiatives that directly support local retailers.

Originally launched in 2007, the festival featured classic cars, food, music, and community performances, and was last renamed "Spring Fling."

Instead of the festival, the Association will run a new Shop Among the Blossoms – Greerton Spring Promotion, including a Market Day on September 20 and a three-week campaign to encourage shopping and local engagement.
