New Awards Give Kiwi Farmers a $1M Boost
Two new awards are making it easier for Kiwi dairy farmers to own their first farm. The Fonterra & ASB First Farm Award (FFA) and ASB Alumni of the Year Award (AAOTY) will hook winners up with $1 million in ASB Business Term Lending at 1% interest for three years, plus mentoring and extra support.
The goal? Remove financial barriers and help farmers take that next big step. Winners will be announced at Baypark, Tauranga, on May 10, 2025, and entries open March 1 at dairyindustryawards.co.nz.

New $80M Surgical Facility Will Ease Surgery Waitlists
A new private surgical facility, Asclepius Surgical, is set to open in Tauranga CBD by late 2026, aiming to cut down waitlists (sitting at 2,747 people). Led by Dr. Mark Fraundorfer, the $80M facility in Panorama Towers will have six theatres, 60 beds, and focus on urology, orthopaedics, gynaecology, and more. Tauranga’s got one of the lowest theatre capacities per capita, so this should take some pressure off Tauranga Hospital, where elective surgeries keep getting pushed back.
The facility is expected to create 100 jobs and bring more people into the city, which means a boost for local businesses. Grace Hospital is also expanding, adding four new theatres to keep up with demand. Health NZ says they’re open to new providers but warns getting funding and staff won’t be easy.
