$164M Health Investment: 24/7 Urgent Care Nationwide

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Health Minister Simeon Brown have announced a new 24/7 urgent care service for Tauranga, set to open by mid-2026 as part of a nationwide investment in urgent care services. The initiative is part of a $164 million Budget allocation over four years aimed at improving access to urgent and after-hours healthcare across New Zealand.

The Tauranga clinic is expected to alleviate pressure on local emergency departments, providing faster access to care for non-critical patients. Additional support will be directed to rural and remote communities within the Midland region, including better access to diagnostics, urgent medicines, and 24/7 on-call clinical support.

Confidence and Life Skills for the Next Generation

Mat Delaney, area operations manager for Hato Hone St John in Western Bay of Plenty, has dedicated 26 years to the organization, starting at age 14 through their youth programme. Initially interested in medicine, Delaney found his calling in paramedic work, eventually becoming a manager overseeing teams helping those in crisis.

He now promotes the Hato Hone St John cadet programme, which offers children aged 5-18 the chance to learn first aid, leadership, and teamwork skills through hands-on activities.

Among the young cadets is Alana Gage-Brown, a confident Year 10 student who joined at age 8 and now competes in interdistrict first aid competitions. Delaney emphasizes that the programme is about building life skills and resilience, both for cadets and for the communities they serve.
