Wet Weather Warning This Weekend
Another soggy weekend is on the cards, with heavy rain expected to hit Northland, Auckland, Coromandel and parts of the Bay of Plenty as we wrap up the school break.
MetService says the ground is already saturated from recent rain, so flooding risks remain. Temperatures are also dropping across the country as a southerly change moves through, bringing chilly mornings and possible frosts, so rug up if you're heading to an Anzac Day dawn service.
By Sunday, there’s a moderate chance of heavy rain warnings being issued for parts of Northland & northern Auckland. So if you’re travelling this weekend, make sure you keep up to date with the weather.

Tauriko Highway Project: $97M Upgrade With Tolls by 2028
A new $97 million roading project is set to transform Tauriko West, with a four-lane highway and upgraded SH29A expected to support growth, cut travel times, and unlock space for 30,000 new homes by 2063. But come 2028, the new stretch of road will likely be tolled.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop says it’s a necessary trade-off to pay for construction and future maintenance. While pricing isn’t confirmed, the move would bring Tauranga’s total number of tolled roads to three. Making it three out of just four in the entire country. Crazy!
The new highway will run from Redwood Lane to the Takitimu Toll Road, with SH29 through Tauriko Village converted into a local road. The project is expected to reduce SH29 travel times by up to 13 minutes and cut serious crashes in half.
Local councillor Marten Rozeboom says it will give more Tauranga residents the option to live closer to work, and nearby businesses like Boerewors NZ are hopeful access will improve once the works are done.
Tauriko School, surrounded by construction, has had a new entry and carpark installed by NZTA. Though long term, the school may need to relocate.
